Mindmapping is an established technique for recording, organizing and sharing information.
Stephen Pierce offers one of the best videos I've seen on mindmapping - very clear points and visuals. He also recommends mindmapping for learning, and for reading a business book.
View it below.
Stephen Pierce's strategy for mindmapping a book -
- Understand and establish your purpose
- Identify keywords directly related to your purpose
- Focus only on your purpose when reading
- After each chapter, start a mindmap with title and author
- Chapter name in the center of the landscape page
- Note keypoints or keywords only relating to your purpose
- Everything else is irrelevant - keep your purpose in mind
After You've Read Each Chapter
When you've read a chapter and done the mindmap for that chapter, then leave it. In maybe 30 minutes, one hour or even the next day, do another mind map called "What Do I Know" - under different headings, to find out exactly what you remembered.
Notetaking
You can use exactly the same technique of mindmapping for notetaking at seminars.
Stephen Pierce says mindmapping makes for more efficient and accelerated learning. He says this will enhance your ability to learn and to reinforce and remember what you learn.
Pierce draws mindmaps freehand. There are also computer generated MindMap business tools. Many of them are free. Mind mapping is a powerful, yet simple strategy for busines use. I used mind mapping to think through the process for choosing a topic for a new blog.
Stephen Pierce's steps for getting the most from a business book are very practical and worth a try.
- How do you read a business book?
- Do you ever read a business book a second time?
- Which business books do you recommend?

Yvonne, what an interesting use of mind-mapping. We all seemed to be stretched for time and this provides a practical way to focus our business reading. I am guilty of reading several business books at once and often not completely finishing them. I had planned to finish a few this summer so it seems a perfect opportunity to give Stephen's method a try. When reading for pleasure or when reading a business book that holds my attention I read it from cover to cover in a day or so.
