Email Subject Lines Revisited - Best And Worst Headlines Study

Delete! Delete! Delete! That seems to be the catchcry of all of us trying to escape from email hell. Business email subject lines are not unlike article or blog post headlines.

Of course, some we can't ignore because we know who they are from, and we need to read them. But with the increasing number of spam and people filtering and deleting, are your legitimate emails getting the delete button heave ho?

I know people who delete, delete, delete and say "If it's really important, they'll get back to me."

Marketing Chimp offers the results of an interesting business email subject line study - Email Marketing Subject Line Comparison: Best and Worst Subject Lines. This was determined by measuring the percentage of times an email was opened and compared against its subject line.

Marketing Chimp offers this advice based on what they learned from the study. 

So what's our advice for email subject lines? This is going to sound "stupid simple" to a lot of people, but here goes: Your subject line should (drum roll please): Describe the subject of your email. Yep, that's it...

When it comes to email marketing, the best subject lines tell what's inside, and the worst subject lines sell what's inside.

As we scan when we read on the web, headlines need to be specific, clear and straighforward. A cutesy or clever business subject line does not work when you are relying on it to inform readers as to your content.
