Whoa! When Does Publicity Go Too Far?

Bridget Wright of Biz Chicks Rule wrote How Uncivilized Can You Be? The Trisha Walsh Smith You Tube Performance.

Bridget shared a video from a news show with snippets from a controversial YouTube video. Keep in mind, that a lawyer interviewed by the news station said it is not slander if it is true.

When Publicity Goes Too Far
They say that hell hath no fury like a woman ssmall_biz_reflections.pngcorned, and actress, Trisha Walsh Smith is living proof.

She made a YouTube video about her imminent eviction from an apartment she had shared with her husband.

She talked about personal details such as their sex life and what she thought about other family members.

I viewed the original video, posted below.

The Power Of Social Media
The actress certainly knows the power of social media as publicity. The YouTube video has been downloaded over 2 million times. When something takes off on YouTube it goes viral.

Whether it achieves what she hoped will no doubt, be played out in court.

The Downside Of Social Media
What alarms me though, is that this is a growing trend in using the web and technology to disseminate negative, potentially harmful information about people and businesses.

The UK's Telegraph asks Is Revenge Now A Dish Best Served Online?

Recent Events

  • In Australia, a restaurant customer sent email feedback, and received an unforgiveably rude and hurtful email in return. This then made the rounds of the web.

  • Politicians in the current US Presidential campaign have had vicious emails circulated about them

  • April Fool's Day "joke" about a prominent blogger being bankrupt

  • Bullying of school students through Facebook.

The Upside of YouTube For Publicity
On the plus side, it shows the power of using the web and social media such as YouTube for legitimate marketing of your small business.

  • Have you used YouTube for publicizing your small business?

  • What are your thoughts about the Trisha Walsh Smith video?
