PGA & Masters Golf Tournaments
In 2007 the prize pool for the PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tournament was $7.5 million.
The Masters series is one of the major tournaments, and is held annually in April. Golf is big business in anyone's language.
What Does A Horse Flu Epidemic Have To Do With It?
But it took a horse flu epidemic for me to make the links about just how wide the sports business t
entacles spread, and how it impacts on other businesses and livelihoods.
In Australia, a horse flu epidemic threatened to wipe out the racing industry in 2007. Horses were not allowed to move out of restricted areas. Races were cancelled.
There was even talk of cancelling the Melbourne Cup, the nation's major race, for the first time in history.
A Day In The Life Of A Horse Racing Event
You may think such things would only affect racing followers. But they did a slow motion of a day in the life of a racecourse. People who stood to lose their businesses and jobs included -
- trainers
- strappers
- jockeys
- cleaners
- caterers
- car attendants
- saddle makers
- equipment suppliers
- maintenance staff
- concession staff
- concession holders
- gate attendants
- veterinarians
- local shopkeepers
- suppliers
.... and so on.

This synergy and interdependence applies to most businesses. Large concerns like the Lollapalooza Music Festival, rock bands such as Radiohead, and smaller businesses such as restaurants all generate business for others.
