I was excited to read about the advent of sup
er speed internet.
The Times Online reports that
"The Grid" is destined to make the Internet as we know it obsolete.
At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
Grid technologies will not be available directly to domestic users but will be licensed by Telcos as they are now. Therein could lie its limitations.
Australian broadband speeds, for example, are way behind those in the US, Europe and Japan. In some countries, there is the bare minimum of coverage at very high costs.
Will it be the same scenario with grid technology, or does the system allow for equal speeds worldwide? How about pricing?
These type of issues are still not entirely clear.
For business, grid technology has major implications. Imagine conducting your teleconference, and seeing your colleagues in holographic representation - yes 3D imaging.
I'll certainly follow developments with interest. Grid technology is sure to revolutionize the face of communication, entertainment, education and business.
A commenter at the Times article, made the observation that science fiction writers predicted such technologies as far back as the 1950's.
Science fiction is becoming science fact.
