Hot on the heels of International Women's Day, I read an interesting discussion about how to attract women to apply for jobs, without breaching anti discrimination laws.
If you specifically need a woman for a job, and can justify this, you may have a case, according to Susan Booth, Queensland's Anti Discrimimination Commissioner.
She cites the case of replacing a woman doctor in a practice where many patients prefer to deal with a woman doctor.
Booth also offers some advice in her a
rticle about reviewing your workplace to make it more attractive to women applicants in the first place.
A Women Friendly Workplace May Consider -
- flexible work shifts
- inclusive job descriptions
- inclusive training programs
- adding "Women are encouraged to apply" to job ads
The two key points that stood out for me were reflections on
- Is there something that discourages women from working in the workplace?
- How can you make the workplace appealing to women?
What else would attract women to a workplace, or is more about the job itself and the pay?
