Do You Make These Basic Business Card Mistakes?

A business card can be a great marketing tool.

However, a poorly planned business card can work against you. A business card needs to be an integral aspect of your business branding and professional image.

Do you make these basic business card mistakes?

  • Use too many different fonts

  • Use fonts that are too small for your target clients to read

  • Use a color that doesn't fit your business

  • Use a style that doesn't fit your business

  • Have a cluttered card

  • Cross out a previous employee's name and replace it with a new staff member's name

  • Cross out changed phone numbers and scribble new details

  • Leave off your state. Don't understimate how far afield your business card may travel

  • Leave off your email

  • Leave off your website

  • Forget to proofread for incorrect spelling or phone numbers before printing

Business cards can make or break a client's perception, and in essence, it may be what would make him or her decide whether he or she wanted to do business with you. A poorly presented card just might ruin your chances, so I guess we should always invest on a good card.

Hi Jay
As you say it's an investment in your business, which is why I'm not keen on homemade business cards printed on perforated business card tear off sheets.

They have all the required information, but don't come across as reflecting a professional business. They may be okay in some instances, I guess, but I personally prefer a more professional card.

Yvonne, I also make sure I keep a stash of business cards with me EVERYWHERE I go to ensure that people I meet get one. You never know who you're going to meet!

Hi Bridget
Exactly! And people pass them on to friends, colleagues and family too.

Thanks for stopping by to add to the conversation.

Hi Yvonne, good tips! Found you through Steve's SMBCEO blog.

My pet peeve is tiny font that is hard to read. Sometimes just one higher font size makes all the difference. Or choosing a crisper font that can be read in a smaller size (often a sans-serif content is easier to read when tiny).

Anita

Hi Anita
I really appreciate you letting me know how you found my blog.

Thanks for your comment. I agree about the font. I think people sometimes want to tell their whole business story, so space is an issue.

Sometimes, people choose fonts they like the look of, rather than eaasy to read fonts.

Yvonne,

Great stuff. These are the sort of articles that those of us who work alone can really use. Sometimes you are sure you've thought of everything, but because we don't often have that second pair of eyes around to double-check we can miss the basics.

Thanks!
Sara

Seems basic, right? But I am amazed (and frustrated) by the number of businesses who throw away potential business by not putting their details clearly on their print materials. It's about business branding as well as communication. Do You Make... [Read More]
