
The US elections are officially up and running with the Iowa caucus today.
As an Australian, far removed geographica
lly from the action in Iowa, I'm following this election closely, as are most other Aussies. It's been widely covered from the first whispers of who was going to run.
We see the latest updates, news and political commentary in the newspapers and on television. We've watched Oprah weigh in and follow Jim Lehrer's nightly report.
Why? What happens in the US affects Australia. In fact, US decisions affect Australia significantly. Quite apart from Australian troops going to Iraq, there are also business implications - the stock market, the exchange rate, the economy and trade agreements etc.
In Australia, voting is compulsory. As a geographically isolated country, the majority of Aussies have a world view. Australians, young and old, will be following the US election race with interest.
