What Does Back In 5 Minutes Mean To Your Customer?

A sign on the store window says "Back in 5 minutes." What does that mean?

Back In Five Minutes
On the face of it, it means exactly what it says. But does it really?  Small retailers tend to have a generic sign or scribble one for the occasion.

Assumptions
They assume they'll only be away a short time. The 5 minutes is often arbitary. It may be shorter. It may be longer. The store owner is indicating they won't be long.

Sole Proprietor
There are times when a sole proprietor may need to leave the store unattended for a brief period. This could be to go to the restroom, to help a customer with goods to the car or for any number of other legitimate reasons.

Back In 5 Minutes
If you hang a sign that says Back in 5 minutes you could also -

  • Indicate the time you left to give customers a time frame, so they know you are not too far away even if you are running late.

  • Give a reason if applicable. If people understand it is  a legitimate reason e.g. taking delivery of stock out the back, they are more likely to be understanding , and less frustrated if they have limited time.

  • Leave a mobile phone number for urgent contact.

  • Don't use a "back in 5 minutes" generic sign if you know you will be half an hour or even 15 minutes. An accurate as possible time estimate gives customers a realistic idea of whether they are able to or prepared to wait.

A temporary store sign is just as important as any other store signage. It's all about communicating clearly with customers.
