Fingerprint technology is rapidly making inroads into the world of small business.
What Is Fingerprint Technology?
We've become used to the notion of fingerprint entry in movie scenarios and more recently at airports. Things are moving fast i
n the world of biometrics, and in business settings.
In Germany shoppers can now use fingerprint technology in lieu of credit cards in supermarkets. Your fingerprint is kept on file electronically, and is in effect, your signature.
What About Mix Ups?
A spokesman I heard on radio today said that the odds of a mix up between fingerprints is one in ten million. He said you are more likely to be robbed on the street.
Potential For Fraud
He didn't mention fraud. I'm not a forensic scientist, but I wonder if fingerprints can be "manufactured" or copied with latex or other innovations.
Whenever there is new technology, there is always someone just as smart trying to beat the system.
Fingerprint Technology Applications
The fingerprint operated concept itself is great though. There are already keyless fingerprint safes, fingerprint locks and finger deadbolt locks.
Other applications include selected guest, member or employee access to certain areas and hotel rooms. No more "Have You Seen My Keys?" or hiding keys under the towel at the beach.
Small Business Advantages
From a customer service and small business point of view, fingerprint technology means faster, more efficient service. This information can be kept on file for easy processing for your next hotel visit, store transaction or keyless entry.
Implications For Attracting & Keeping Customers
As customers may not want their fingerprint stored in too many places, as it's their signature, this may have implications for customer loyalty too.
