What the Heck is an Etsy?
No, it's not that phrase from the song about the spider, though I know some folks sing it that way.  (I was always taught it's "Eensy Weensy Spider", but I digress.)  Anywho, during my time away from these business blogs, I've slowly but surely headed out a smidge further into the blogosphere to actually read blogs.  Thanks to my friend Jess and the incredible finds she makes and posts about, it's been a little easier to find bloggers who offer up inspiring, entertaining, and all around incredible blogs.  During my adventures I've noticed one thing: many of the really amazing crafty ladies have "shops" someplace called Etsy.  Could this be something worth looking into?

Definitely!  Come to find out Etsy is a website where you, oh great crafty ones, can sell off all of your handmade treasures!  (There are those of us who will always be limited to being on the buying end, I'm afraid.)  There are forums, a blog, a sellers' showcase where folks can shine a light on their own featured products, and even a Featured Sellers section with interviews that are apparently updated every 3.5 days.

Best part about it?  Becoming an Etsy user (buyer or seller) is free.  When you list an item you pay a small amount and when you sell it, they get a percentage.

My call?  If you're always working on one project after another and other people are constantly commenting on your skills and the great goodies you turn out, telling you to start a shop, this is a really interesting way to do it without having to build your own website and pay for web hosting, site design, and the like!

Excellent info! This would be easy to do for someone who is crafty, but needs an outlet for those crafts!
Sometimes the craft shows can be a huge hassle!

My friend Heather turned me on to Etsy about a year ago. While I don't have the same time to devote to my accessories or textiles like back in college it's a great way for artists and crafters to set up shop.

If you're interested in getting into crafting, I'd recommend http://notmartha.org/ - creative types share DIY how-tos and projects -- you might just get inspired.

That is so funny! I didn't want to announce mine 'til I launched it. Gosh...guess that's what I get for not running my ideas by you first ;). Anyone my etsy site is www.mainelymom.etsy.com .

Cheryl: Yes, it does seem like a great way of doing things with less expense (and hassle!) than hitting the road.

Marilee: I just hit Not Martha last night through a link on someone else's blog; it's wonderful! Thanks for the tip as well.

Jess: No need to tell me first. LOL I felt like a goober though, telling you to sell it and poof, you had a shop. hahaha Better to have it set up in advance, frankly, before announcing it. GREAT call on your part!

Since Easton Ellsworth of BusinessBlogWire was kind enough to include me in his most recent list of blogtipped folks, it sparked my urge to pass along the favor.  Since I've just begun seeking out more "crafty" type blogs and have... [Read More]

Every seller on Etsy gets their own shop (for free), located at username.etsy.com. For example, if my username is rokali, my shop is at rokali.etsy.com. You can customize your shop by adding a banner, bio etc.
