...One pizza at a time!
Okay, I know it sounds hokey, but I just finished reading a great blurb in EatingWell magazine about a small business with a huge heart.
As it turns out, the owner of Galactic Pizza in Minneapolis, MN, has something green on his mind -- and it's not the color of money. More like, it's green business (okay, maybe some pizza toppings too). Pete Bonahoom, aka "Captain Organic", started Galactic a couple of years back after a less than thrilling career in finance. Now he's using his business to serve his community and giving back in a multitude of ways.
Bonahoom's pizza place uses menus made of hemp and boxes that are unbleached and partially recyclable, while his equipment is fueled by wind power. He donates 5% of his after-tax profits to charity and offers customers the opportunity to contribute through their meal selections as well. Those who choose the Harvest Heartland Pizza add to donations with $1 of the cost earmarked for charity, while an order for the Community Supported Agriculture Pizza supports local farmers through a CSA. The delivery vehicle at your door is even electric!
According to the piece (the written one, not a piece of the pizza), Bonahoom is right on track with his business plan, and his goal is to lead the way for other businesses while creating a highly successful venture of his own. Seems to be rubbing off on his staff, since delivery driver Cameron Evans (aka "Luke Pie-rocker") helped out a member of the community this summer by stopping a purse snatching.
Can you imagine the look on the face of the would-be robber when a pizza dude in a cape and tights confronted him? Now that is something for the comics!
