Meet & Greet: Laurie Hayes of The HBB Source (Part 3)

* What do you enjoy the most about operating your business?  What tasks would you perform even if it had nothing to do with the successful operation of your company?

Freedom - being able to sit in my boat, write articles and develop programs, while my husband fishes.  Even if I wasn't paid for it I would continue to create structures and processes around everything I get my hands on that I know is capable of running more efficiently and effectively.

*What is the least enjoyable part of operating your business?  Are there any tasks you'd gladly delegate to anyone else, no matter what the price?

The least enjoyable part is getting sunburned while working from the back patio.  I'm happy to delegate cooking because it takes up so much time and really is an unpleasant task for me.  I would love to delegate the reading of my e-mail to someone but sometimes a simple one-line note gives me a new path to explore or a new idea to run with, so for now, I still read all of the e-mail myself.  Thank goodness for spam filters.

* What's the worst advice you've been given with regard to building or operating your business?  How about the best advice?

The worst advice was from a marketing coach I found online.  I spent over $3,600 for his help and he failed to deliver.  He assigned one of his students to coach me and we had five sessions in total.  I walked away with little to show for our work together and when I asked for my money back or to work with him personally I was told I would have to pay another $3,600.  He suggested I write my own ads and run them in my local paper.  (Terrible advice and another $300 plus mistake.)  It was an expensive lesson for a green business owner.  Now I tell everyone, always make sure there is a money-back guarantee and work with people who have been referred to you, or you've thoroughly checked them out.  Get references!!!

Best advice was from a sales coach I was referred to.  She helped me get clear on my target market, taught me the basics of selling and got me headed down the right path.
