Meet & Greet: Bud Bilanich, the Common Sense Guy (Part 3)
Welcome back to SmallBizMentor.com!  We're starting off the week with a continuation of our Meet & Greet with Bud Bilanich, the Common Sense Guy.  Bud has plenty to share when it comes to his thoughts on education, overcoming obstacles, and remaining positive, and a sneak peek into his current and upcoming projects.  I'll let him do the talking though...he does it best!

* Please tell us about the resources you've used thus far and would recommend to others (or steer them away from).  Take a moment to share your educational background (both academic and work-based) and point out things that have helped or hindered you along the way from that education.

Let's start with education.  I am a big fan of higher education, but not for the reasons you might expect.  I think too many people treat college and graduate school as a trade school.  They are so focused on getting the credential that will position them for their career, that they lose sight of all the opportunities available to learn interesting things.  In undergraduate school, I took a course in film appreciation.  That course truly enriched my life.  I am a huge movie fan.  The ideas I learned in Theatre 101 at Penn State in 1968 taught me how to truly appreciate all of the elements of film.  I believe my life is richer because of this.

But I digress.  I have three degrees:

  • BS, Journalism and Broadcasting, Penn State
  • MA, Interpersonal and Organization Communication, University of Colorado
  • EdD, Adult Education and Organization Behavior and Intervention, Harvard University

Also, I have participated in as many professional development workshops as possible over the years.  I have found the work I did at the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science to be the most helpful - from both a personal and a professional development perspective.

As for other resources, I have the following suggestion.  Find someone who you like and trust.  Learn from him or her.

* What do you enjoy the most about operating your business?  What tasks would you perform even if it had nothing to do with the successful operation of your company?

I like everything about being in business.  I like selling my services and then doing the work once I've made a sale.  I'm very involved with my marketing.  I work with a web designer, graphic designer and video producer, but I am very involved in the creation of my marketing material.  I particularly like writing and creating information products.  I have found that I've learned a few things in 30 years and I am greatly enjoying creating products to share this knowledge.
