How many of you have faith...in something other than the fact that you're going to write the Great American Novel sometime in this lifetime? If you're a writer who professes a certain denomination or is interested in matters of faith and religious practices, you'll be interested to know that the religion/spiritual writing category is one of the fastest-growing in the publishing arena.
G. Miki Hayden has pulled together a fantastic article called "Answering the Call" for the May 2006 edition of Writer's Digest. In it she discusses Christian fiction and nonfiction, Jewish fiction, Muslim fiction, Buddhist nonfiction, nonsectarian opportunities and interfaith/New Age publishing.
The article itself is chock full of great resources, including almost two pages of listings for magazines, book publishers, agents and other organizations for those interested in the faith-focused genres. No piece can cover every base, though, so here are a few more publications and organizations for you to check out, no matter what your beliefs.
- American Night Writers Association (ANWA): a network for LDS women writers
- Associated Church Press: Offers membership to freelance writers, artists, Web designers and more.
- Catholic Press Association: mission is to strengthen the Catholic press of the USA and Canada.
Try to find a copy of the Christian Writers' Market Guide as well. The 2006 edition should be available by now through Writers Digest Book Club.
