Okay, writers, start your pencils (er, engines). The Writer magazine is sponsoring a memoir contest with a first prize of $1,000.
Contestants must supply two copies of " an essay about a meaningful personal experience" along with a $10 entry fee (per entry, multiple entries allowed) to The Writer by 30 June 2006.
Essays must be original and previously unpublished, in English, and submitted by the author, who must be 18 years of age. Maximum length is 1,200 words.
Second and third place winners will also get cash prizes; all three winning submissions will be published on The Writer website, with the first place winner also to be published in the print publication.
