Marketing Monday: Using a Blog to Market Your Business

Since you're visiting SmallBizMentor, I have made the assumption that you're pretty familiar with the concept of a weblog, or "blog".  But did you know that you can use one to market your business?  Yes, you sure can.  I've mentioned the importance of having a website for your company, and one of the options that I suggested for your site is a blog.

This is due to the fact that a blog can be an excellent way of communicating with your clients and potential clients.  It's a venue for sharing information about new products and services, a place to sit down and "chat" with current customers about what they'd like to see from you next, and an opportunity to put a face on your company and brand.

Don't just take my word for it though.  Biana Babinsky of Avocado Consulting, Inc. has an interesting article up over at Small Business Brief that will provide you with five ways you can use your blog to market your business.  Writers, this is especially important to you.  More and more freelancers are being picked up by editors because of professional-quality writing samples and posts full of style on their blogs!  (And no matter what your field, don't forget: spell check, spell check, spell check!)

A blog can help a business immeasurably - perhaps more noticeably with a small business. I blog all about this topic so if anyone wants to, they can come talk to me about the benefits of blogs for businesses. Perhaps even more significant than the profit you can get directly from blogging is the name/brand recognition.

Excellent point, Easton. I think that's the most important part of the lesson. While some folks are certainly making a living off of affiliate marketing and other such sales options on blogs, they don't really fall into the concept of a shopping area like a traditional website would. Business blogs, to me, are much more effective when viewed as a tool to build one's brand and create an interesting network of potential clients and colleagues. Making money for the business directly off the blog would be an encouraging "side effect", I think, but one shouldn't expect it. Watch today for a post about a green company that has created a blog for just this concept. :-)
