Looking for ways to carve a home office out of the space in your house? Check out Home Office Solutions: Creating a Space That Works for You by Lisa Kanarek. Kanarek, the founder of HomeOfficeLife.com, is an expert when it comes to everything from setting up your home office to making the transition from a corporate office to a home-based office. She's written several other books, including Everything's Organized, 101 Home Office Success Stories, and Organizing Your Home Office for Success. (Sounds like she loves organizing, doesn't it? A woman after my own heart!)
Home Office Solutions doesn't just tackle interior design and ergonomics though. Kanarek has also taken the time to discuss the pros and cons of working from home, whether you're a telecommuter, a freelancer, a home-based business operator or even sharing an office with someone else.
I love how she touches on work-at-home parents, tons of technology that is of use to the home-based worker, and most of all, her "FREEDOM" home office plan. (You'll have to read the book to learn about that though. Trust me, it's the perfect plan to get you going. If you only read one page closely, make it that one!)
The photos in this book are inspiring, though some were a bit too austere for my taste. One section that I found particularly helpful is the "Working Home Offices" chapter, which offers specific examples of how home-based workers have made their offices work for them, instead of against them. Touching on folks like an interior designer, web designers, a researcher, a writer and others, this chapter offers floor plans, photos, and focused lists of how and why to incorporate various aspects based on one's career path.
Kanarek also offers additional resources over at her website, so stop by there as well. Make sure you sign her guestbook and let her know SmallBizMentor sent you!
