"9 Things You Simply MUST DO"

Ever wonder about those people who always seem to be ahead of the game, and how they got there?  Dr. Henry Cloud apparently did too.  His book, 9 Things You Simply MUST DO to Succeed in Love and Life, seeks to pull the principles of living out of those who seem to do it best and offer them up to the rest of us for analysis and implementation.

I have to admit that what drew me into this book was how positive it sounded on the flyleaf.  Rather than focusing on a bunch of negative "problems" people create for themselves, Dr. Cloud instead chose to focus on the positive: what works in the lives of successful people and the habits they all practiced.

These concepts include: "pull the tooth", "hate well", "don't play fair", and "upset the right people", along with five other interesting points.  The last chapter addresses how one can become what Cloud calls a "deja vu person", which entails a twelve step process of applying the nine things discussed in the book.

Interesting stuff...which I am now about to go read further!

In this post you say "I have to admit that what drew me into this book was how positive it sounded on the flyleaf. I agree. I think that focusing on the positive and building on it is a great way to help people learn and grow. When working with my coahcing clients, I always get them to focus on what they do well, and how they can apply these strengths to overcoming the obstacles they are facing.

This is very different from focusing on their problems and issues. I have found that building on strengths is far more productive than fixing problems and overcoming weaknesses.

Thanks for the tip on the book. I'll pick it up and read it.

All the best,

Thank you, Bud; I hope you enjoy the book too! I find that focusing on the positive, on people's strengths, works well in all aspects of education. As a homeschooling parent I have to adjust and overcome the urge to try to use the same teaching style (the one I learn best from!) with each of my students. It's so easy to forget that what works for myself or one of the kids doesn't always work for the other(s).
