As I mentioned earlier this month, a growing number of military veterans are striking out on their own when they come to the end of their time in service. Come to find out, about 4 million small businesses are owned by veterans. Steven Strauss (this year's SBA Small Business Journalist of the Year) has pulled together an interesting response to a parent who wrote to USA Today asking for resources for a son in service who'll be heading home soon.
There are some fantastic resources listed in the article (along with facts you need to know), but no live links to the organizations in question. Just to make life easier, I've looked them up and listed them for you here, along with a favorite of my own.
- Veterans Business Journal
- Veteran Owned Business Expo
- SBA Office of Veterans Business Development
- The Veterans Corporation
I also highly recommend that any vets considering starting a business look into joining USAA (if you're not already a member). While they don't specifically focus on entrepreneurial efforts, they do offer everything from insurance and investment options to financial planning, mortgages and auto loans, and tons of other services every business person should get lined up, for business or pleasure. I've personally been a member since 1998, and have never had more pleasurable customer experiences with any other company of any type. (Even the ladies that work at my favorite spa...and that's going some!)
