I don't know about you, but all the spring cleaning lately has made me want to hit the road and head off into the sunset...to a hotel where someone else will do the cleaning for a day or two. Granted, that may or may not be in the cards for me, but if you're a writer with a bit of a budget to spare, you might want to consider combining business with pleasure.
Professional development, networking, meeting of the minds: whatever you want to call it, I hear tell you can find it at a lot of writers' retreats, workshops and conferences. Do you have a dream list, a list of conventions you'd give your eyeteeth (or a copy of your chapbook) to attend?
I sure do...and here's the top five from it (in no particular order...I'll take a plane ticket and entry fee to any of the below, thanks!):
- Maui Writers Conference and Retreat: Retreat takes place Aug 27th - Sept 1st; the Conference takes place Sept 1st to Sept 4th. (Okay, you got me...I lied. This one actually is the Big Kahuna of conferences I'd like to attend. But c'mon...Can you blame me?)
- Marymount Manhattan Writers' Conference 2006: Five words, folks: Keynote Speaker Joyce Carol Oates.
- 33rd Midwest Writers Workshop: Authors, publishers, agents, oh my!
- Santa Barbara Writers Conference: Five more words: Speakers Ray Bradbury and Erica Jong. Yes, REALLY!
- Truro Center for the Arts Castle Hill: Summer Writing Workshops on Cape Cod. Let me repeat myself: "on Cape Cod". 'Nuff said.
