Get to Know Michelle Dunn (Part 2)
  • What do you enjoy the most about operating your business? What tasks would you perform even if it had nothing to do with the successful operation of your company?

I love to write and help people. I love when someone tells me one of my books helped them succeed. I would perform marketing, I have found this is a full time job when you are an author and one that I am very good at and love.

  • What is the least enjoyable part of operating your business? Are there any tasks you’d gladly delegate to anyone else, no matter what the price?

Bookkeeping and taxes! I did finally delegate that and now have an accountant who handles that for me so I can focus on what I enjoy and do well.

  • What’s the worst advice you’ve been given with regard to building or operating your business? How about the best advice?

The worst advice would be not to worry about the law when doing debt collection, it is very important to follow the law. The best advice is to network and meet people, help people and they will help you.

  • What challenges have you overcome during your endeavor? Please describe something that impacted you financially or intellectually and how you got past it.

When I started out as a bill collector it was mainly an industry dominated by men. There are many more women in this industry now and I feel that some of them are here because I helped them and that makes me feel great.

Melanie, your post particularly touched me 'cause I really enjoy stories of how men and women can pull together in any business.

Our differences (which often keep us apart) can bring new life together when we capitalize on what each does best!

I saw steps toward that personified in your story of care and help -- and I'll best the women you mentored did too!

Thank you, Ellen, for your kind comments. I've forwarded them to Michelle Dunn so she can read your thoughts as well! I'm sure she'll be pleased to hear how her responses affected you.

Hi Ellen, Thank you! I do have women who email me and come to meet me just to thank me. It is really very awesome. I started my business to be home with my kids and be my own boss. I never thought of myself as a role model but now see that by taking a risk, I became a role model.
I love that I am able to help others be successful.
