As I may have mentioned in the past, I love the idea of working from home and being able to pick up and go whenever I like. Part of this is the freedom of knowing I can leave the "office" for personal reasons; the other part is that when I do so, if I want to take work with me (say, on a weekend trip to the coast, when I know full well I'll want to check email), it's a very valid option.
I think by now it's pretty obvious to most of us that a laptop and cell phone are vital to the entrepreneur's "home away from home" office. With as fast as the technology changes though (um, yeah, can you say hundreds of times a day?), it's ever so hard to keep up on it all. I start to feel overwhelmed, and I bet I'm not the only one who just says, "Forget it, I'll forge on with what I already have."
Now that the techno-gurus of our small biz sector are snickering behind their incredibly up-to-the-minute flat screen monitors, (stop that! I see you!), let me let you in on a little something that might help if you are like me and much prefer the basics of techy-type info dropped in your lap in manageable chunks.
Psst...go check out the new issue of Entrepreneur. Mine arrived in the mailbox today and it has a lovely little pull-out section just about "The Extended Office". Yep, folks, they've catered to our clueless whims by provided a magazine within a magazine, chock full of information about things such as security for your laptop, wireless networks, a virtual switchboard and something called a "Pixie Printer". Methinks they don't mean it only prints pictures of Tinkerbell for your three year old to scribble on while you chat with clients, but one never knows. A quick glance at the blurb about it tells me it's from Brother but makes no mention of pixie dust.
