When I first flipped through a copy of Tom Markert's You Can't Win a Fight with Your Boss & 55 Other Rules for Success, I happened across a couple of funny lines and thought, "This might be good for a laugh". Upon further reading, however, this book is actually right on the money on a lot of things.
Though the focus is on the corporate worker, there's a lot of advice here that the small- or home-based business owner can quite easily adapt to their own situation. Actually, it's not "can"...there's information here that many business owners should use. For instance, everyone can benefit from the reasoning behind rule 1: "Work Hard and Smart" or rule 2: "No One is Entitled to Anything!"
"Write Well" and "Know Your Numbers" apply even more to the small business owner, frankly, than to the corporate climber. After all, your business depends on you knowing your stuff and presenting it well! "Take Care of Your Best People" applies to both your customers or clients and any independent contractors, employees, or colleagues you interact with.
Much to be learned here and it's presented in a succinct, snappy format that makes the information available whether you're reading this book cover-to-cover in one sitting or grabbing nuggets here and there on the run. Next time you're looking for something to read, check it out!
