If you're considering purchasing a franchise to get you started as a small business owner, you'll want to do your due diligence and research all your options. While there are several periodicals available at the newsstands for those considering becoming involved with a franchise operation, it turns out there are also franchise expos for interested parties as well. The Federal Trade Commission created A Consumer's Guide to Buying a Franchise, which I just found reprinted over at FranchiseTrade.com.
Whether you're just vaguely considering franchising as your business opportunity or if you're ready to go, just wondering which one to buy, this may give you some needed tips. Starting with the basics (knowing how much you can afford to invest) and working all the way through comparison shopping and resisting freebies and pressure from exhibitors, the article will get your toes wet and remind you of the important issues too (don't forget to take notes!). Interesting stuff!

Great stuff here Melanie, thanks! Another cool book I've enjoyed on this topic is by Robert Justis et al, ACHIEVING WEALTH THROUGH FRANCHISING. It's a 2001 title, but it's quite well laid out. I find the topic quite a tough one -- because of all the silly laws somebody added to franchising. Thoughts?
