
As a homeschooling parent I frequently see recruiting literature from supplemental education franchises and work-from-home opportunities. Two of the big names, Kumon and Sylvan, are all over the place with ads in not just periodicals but also on radio, TV and the Internet. Those of you who are parents have probably even seen the literature in the classroom or at school events, where teachers who moonlight as tutors will give you the skinny on their off-time services.
You may be considering such a franchise as a business opportunity and I have to admit, it's a great brand to build on if you are fully, well, educated. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that one!) While the various educational companies will certainly toot their own horns, I found this article to offer some fairly good insight to get you started. Patricia Shaefer's article entitled "Franchise Leaders in Supplemental Education: A Tale of Two Tutors" hits on information from the two "big boys" in the school yard (or, just across from the schoolyard, as it were).
