Guess what, freelance writers! It's that time of year again! Yes, yes, you probably figured it out from the title... Writer's Digest has announced their annual writing competition. Not familiar with it? Grab a copy of the April 2006 issue (mine arrived today) and turn to page 40. Check out the big hurkin' spread about the contest.
Don't have your copy handy? Here's a really short version of the skinny:
- You can compete in 10 categories: Children's/Young Adult Fiction, Television/Movie Script, Stage Play, Non-rhyming Poetry, Rhyming Poetry, Mainstream/Literary Short Story, Genre Short Story (Mystery, Romance, etc), Magazine Feature Article, Memoirs/Personal Essay and/or Inspirational Writing (Spiritual/Religious).
- You can enter as many manuscripts as you like, but there are entry fees required for each entry.
- The deadline for entry is 15 May 2006. Late entries will be accepted through 1 June 2006, but additional fees are required.
- They are offering a total of more than $30,000 in cash and prizes, but the biggie is the grand prize of $3,000 cash and a trip to New York City to meet with agents or editors. The first prize winner (in each category) gets $1,000 cash, marketing advice and a manuscript critique and a groovy $100 worth of Writer's Digest Books.
Sound interesting? Pull out your best writing or get going on a rough draft of something new...polish it up then enter over at the Writer's Digest website or by mail using the forms in the magazine. Tell me if you win; I'll help you shout it from the rooftops!
