One of the nice things about operating a small- or home-based business in certain industries is mobility. Depending on your field, you could probably use today's technology to operate out of your vehicle and no one would even know!
As I perused my wireless bill today (yes, paid it too, unfortunately), I found out that Verizon now offers BroadbandAccess in almost 200 metropolitan areas. For those of you, like me, who are an hour away from what could be considered a "metropolitan area", well, there's always their "NationalAccess" plan. Either way, for $60 or so you can now hook up your laptop and get wireless access without worrying about where the nearest hot spot is. I may well have to check into this! Sure would be nice to ditch the good old phone company...although they are very nice people.
If you prefer to go the hot spot route, T-Mobile and just about everyone else offer daily and monthly rates. That's especially fun for the occasional road warrior who just wants to pop by Borders, grab some business magazines and some email access. Free hot spots are always an option too, of course...and can't we all agree that "free is good"?
Thanks to the number of business travelers demanding wi-fi access, more and more airports and hotels are offering freebie hot spots. You can find a directory of them at Wi-Fi Freespot (TM) before you hit the road on the next trip to a conference or meeting. Why, when I was a kid my folks used to use AAA to plot out their routes based on where the rest stops and construction were. Now maybe they'll do their TripTik based on hot spots...

great tips...now I just need to get me a laptop!
