If your small business focuses on delivery of products or services outside of your office (carpet cleaning, floral industry, etc), you probably use at least one vehicle for business purposes, if not an entire fleet. If you're just starting to look for a vehicle (or several) for your company, it might be worth your while to consider "green" vehicles. With a growing number of municipalities and companies investing in hybrids (check out dozens of articles at AllBusiness.com), and even the U.S. military getting into the act, it's easy to see the potential public relations bump such a choice could give a company.
As I've mentioned before, going green is a positive choice that can not only impact your bottom line (and your conscience), but it can also draw in new or repeat business. As the general public becomes more concerned and better educated about the many steps that can be taken to lessen the impact they have on the environment, the more likely it is that your customers (and potential customers) will choose a "green" company over one they perceive to have a less-positive, or even negative, impact on the environment.
Both the federal government and various state agencies have started encouraging businesses of all sizes as they consider greening their fleet. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency offers a "Green Fleets" website where businesses and organizations can get information about creating and maintaining a green fleet, including a list of fuel stations offering E-85 (85% Ethanol fuel) for fill-up time. Those who purchase qualifying "energy efficient" or "alternative energy" vehicles may be able to claim a tax credit on their federal income taxes as well. (Check IRS publication 505 or ask your tax preparer for details.)
Whether you are just starting out with a new business and want to take every step you can to "be green", or if you're revamping your current business practices to clean up your act, one of these vehicles may be the perfect card to play. Take some time to investigate all your options as you buy your first or fiftieth fleet vehicle; you may be pleasantly surprised at the benefits of going green.
