According to this article, unemployment rates for January 2006 are at a 4 1/2 year low. That's a good thing, yes? Apparently "the economy" created enough jobs that the unemployment dropped to 4.7 percent, the lowest rate since July 2001.
Payroll grew last month, and job growth from August til December 2005 was higher than originally reported.
The one thing I keep coming back to, though, is that phrase about "the economy". Okay, I understand the concept here.
After all, everyone wants "the economy" to be good, right? And when "the economy" is bad, it's a big, bad, faceless bogeyman that we can all blame. That's a great psychological usage if I ever heard it. Marketing and spin in action.
On the flip side, though, I think it's odd that corporate America doesn't step up and say, "Employers created job growth based on the good economy." Or maybe, "Previously unemployed persons worked hard to create their own jobs by starting businesses."
Hmmm, now there's a concept for you entrepreneurs. How many of you have taken your own "unemployment" status (whether laid off, fired, or whatever) and turned it around by building your own business? I bet there are quite a few.
What did you do? How did you do it? And WHY did you do it? Not everyone has a million-dollar idea, pops it into overdrive and quits their job a month later. How many businesses are being built out of adversity? This mind wants to know!
