BusinessWeek Addresses Home Education

My colleague Marta Wells recently introduced me to her visitors over at WorkFromHomeMomma.com and in her post mentioned that I am a homeschooling parent.  (She also asked how I do it all...my answer to that will come when I get more done and can reply.  *chuckle*)

I do, however, feel that home education is an option more and more entrepreneurs should consider for their children.  Where better to learn the ins and outs of networking, customer service, investments and profit and loss than with their best mentor: YOU!  On the flip side, more homeschooling parents are attempting to build businesses from home or choosing to telecommute for work in order to be able to spend the bulk of their time at home, with their families, rather than outside the home working.

That's why I found this article in BusinessWeek incredibly interesting.  You know it's not just a "fad" when your method of education makes it into BusinessWeek!  One side note here though, folks...home education isn't just for "affluent parents" as this article seems to say.  There are a million ways to make it work for your family if you select this educational option for your children.  In future posts I will address both the pros and cons of attempting to create a career from home while homeschooling, and I'll offer you suggestions for finding resources if you'd like to give it a whirl.

For me, home education is not just a schooling issue, it's a lifestyle of learning.  Isn't that the basis for most entrepreneurs?  Pushing the limits, learning as you go, and finding your passion...then building something out of it?  More to come, I promise.

Melonie,

I really enjoyed your story as I have homeschooled my children while also having a number of businesses through the years.(they've been out of the nest for a while)

It's amazing the creativy and innovative ideas that can come once you take the big plunge.

That's great to know, Gary! You understand I'm going to twist your arm sometime soon and make you share some of your experiences as a homeschooling/homeworker, right?

I'd be glad to have you twist my arm and share some of those experiences, oh, and Melonie, be gentle - OK!

Sounds great, Gary, and yes, I'll try to be nice about it. LOL
