Women in Business: Thinking "Pink"

What else did I enjoy (or not) about the December.January 2006 edition of PINK Magazine?  Read on:

  • "Woman's Work" (pg. 37) featured B-52 bomber pilot Capt. Andrea Jensen.  Maybe it's because I'm an Army brat, living in a predominantly military community, or maybe it's because I'm in awe of this woman only a year older than myself who is capable of flying a B-52, but this, to me, is "a good thing".  Frankly, PINK ladies, I'd love to see even more of these sort of career women in your publication.  In fact, let's discuss the companies that are specifically hunting for former military officers, and the worth of these individuals in the civilian business community.  (Need ideas?  Check out back issues of Money.)
  • "Books in the PINK"...show me more of these too.  I've added the two featured titles to my library list (yes, folks, for next Tuesday).  Now I want to see more!
  • "Pap Smear Update" by Mary Anne Dunkin: This is good stuff.  Everyone needs a reminder, especially the gals who will put their company and their colleagues ahead of their own health, and this can be a lifesaving test.  And to be honest, if we're going to talk about the unfunny cartoon at the end of the mag, we should give a tip of the hat to the cartoon at the beginning of this article.  C'mon, admit it...there are certain things that are so incredibly necessary and yet nerve wracking that we have to make ourselves laugh about them.  Did ya see the little sunshine poster?  'Nuff said.
  • I could go on and on, but I'll end with the one piece that had me nodding in agreement and then shaking my head in dismay: the sidebar "The Power of Subtle Retaliation: 10 Ways to Do It", which was served up with the "Sweating the Small Stuff" piece.  Certain points in this sidebar were excellent, such as forgetting the tirade and ending the apologizing.  And there is no better come back concept (or line) than the one suggested in #9: "...calmly reply, 'How would you feel if someone said that to your daughter?'" On the flip side, I cannot, for the life of me, imagine winking at an offender over a lunch order and saying I'd get lunch if they'll get dessert.  Of course these days the person you wink at could turn around and file charges against YOU for such a method.  Or maybe I'm just paranoid.

All that said, I still stand by my suggestion of PINK Magazine as a resource for women in business, as I mentioned previously.  Overall, I've been happy with each issue I've read and I do truly enjoy them.  In fact, I've gotten to the subscription card...so I think I'll go fill it out!
