Is your business prepared should you face a natural disaster or even a simple lengthy power outage? As I compose this entry, I am working on a laptop on battery power. Working from home has its perks, but it also has its downfalls. For the second time in two days, large storms have taken out my power sources. (Thank goodness for this laptop and its battery!) What about important documents? Scan or download all of your important business documents (business license, accounts payable and accounts receivable files, tax records, etc). Take the time to create an emergency contact list too. Save them to a CD- or DVD-ROM or portable hard drive. Some of these drives are the size of a keychain…now that’s technology! I recommend that you make at least two copies of each disc if you save the files to CD-ROM. How about food? Most of us have a tendency to stock up on snacks in the office anyway. Make sure that your next trip to the warehouse store includes an extra case of bottled water for your office or store, along with foods that are not just tasty but sustaining. It’s one thing to have a box of your favorite candy bars stashed in the back of the desk drawer; it’s another to have items like crackers, dried fruit and other nutritious meal items handy. These are also items that should be in your “grab & go” or vehicle as well.
